Education
The number of the students in the education system depends on the demographic growth of the country. The low birth rate of the recent years determines the absolute and relative reduction of the quota of provided education for secondary school pre-primary education, primary education, etc… Kindergartens The theoretical age is 3-6 years. A clear decreasing tendency is noticed over the period 1996 -2000. In 2000, 3249 kindergartens were in function in the country. Compared to 1996 their reduction is 464 (12.5%), the children are some 200000, it is 18.9% less compared to 1996. The average number of children in a kindergarten for the country is 62 (downtown 101 - in villages 28). The average number children, setting up a group, is approximately 21 (downtown 23 - in villages 18). Because of the constant decreasing tendency of the children registered in a kindergarten, the number of personnel teaching falls too. In 2000, compared with 1996, the teaching personnel in the kindergartens decreases by 4700 (20%). For the same period, the number of pedagogues with a diploma of higher studies increases by 37% in 1996 to 48.5% in 2000. In 2000 years, in the country, 18 private kindergartens functioned, with 318 children whose education is entrusted to 51 qualified pedagogues. Primary education The number of primary schools at the beginning of the school year 2000/2001 is 2843. Compared to the year 1996/97, the reduction is 407. During the year 2000/2001 the number of students in the primary schools was 864400, a reduction of 7.9% compared with 1996. 84.6% of the children begin there their education at the seven years age. During the period 1998/1999, 63.3% of the students in the primary schools studied foreign languages. In 2000/2001 they were 69.9%. In 2000, 74300 pupils followed primary education and 32600 received a diploma of secondary education in general education. The number of professors in these kinds of schools, also, records a reduction. 77.1% of the professors have a higher education. The women are most numerous in the educational professions - they are 82.7% of the professors and persons in charge for an average of 22 pupils each one. The private schools are not numerous. The students with a chronic disease or permanent handicaps, and with an unequal social status or without the support on a permanent or temporary way of the parents and the family are accomodated in 136 specialized schools. They are 16300 taken care of by some by 2268 teachers. In 2000, 618 students followed primary education in the specialized schools and 145 achieved secondary education. Professional education There are, for professional education: - 18 schools of art with 3400 pupils, - 348 professional technical training schools where 135500 students study, - 128 secondary professional technical training schools where 44500 students study. - 3 professional technical training schools and professional classes for the achievement of the 6th and 7th years of studies with 2300 students, - a professional technical training school and professional classes for the achievement of the 8th year of studies with 594 students, - 18 vocational schools for the achievement of secondary studies with 51000 students. The number of technical training schools and professional increases with the number of their students. In 2000/2001 the number of students had increased by 11.2% compared to 1996/97. These last years, the preferred fields of the pupils are "machine, manufacture and construction" (38.4%) in the technical training schools and 45.7% of the students in the vocational schools. The economic subjects with particularly "management and administration" follow like preferred subjects. The professors in the vocational schools are 18000 of which 68.3% are women. 84.5% of the professors are graduate higher education. An average of 3% of the students leave before term obligatory schooling, generally for family reasons. Higher education These last years the number of universities and specialized higher educational establishments remained comparatively constant. The students in specialized universities and institutes are approximately 227000 with a reduction in enrôlement in only 7,3% (compared with the fall of the inscription of the schooling of the youth for the same period). The number of Bulgarian students, citizens, is approximately 220000 with liked prevalent matters "management and administration" (21.3%) and "technology, manufacture and construction" (16.3%). Bulgaria counts four universities and higher specialized private educational establishments with 25500 students. The foreign students in Bulgaria are above all: Greeks (42.5%), Macedonians (20.4%), Turks (8.2%), Ukrainiens (5.1%) and Moldaves (5%). An average of 41200 students finish higher studies of the Master degree level and higher. The number of professors in the higher education also decreases (reference period 1996 - 2000: 9.1%). 67% are full-time and the remainder part-time. The Assistants represent about half of the teaching body. The number of students preparing a doctorate is into big rise and 10% are not-Bulgarian. Nearly 400 doctorates are allotted each year.
