According to the last census led in March 2001, the Bulgarian population counts 7 707 495 inhabitants, and with a negative annual natural rate of increase (-0,92 %). the rate of fertility rate stands at 1,34 child/woman, that is to say one of the lowest of the region. The country is also marked by a strong emigration and an increase in the death rate. A journalist of a Bulgarian daily newspaper calculated that, taking into account the weak birth rate and if the current of immigration continued, the Bulgarian population would be 0 in 2060. The average life expectancy is 71,5 years with 68,14 years for men and 75,59 years for women. The ageing of the population will pose in the medium term, as in a number of countries, the problem of the financing of the retirements, the reduction of the domestic consumption and the competitiveness of the country.
